How the gravel calculation works

Find the area

Rectangle: length × width. Circle: π × (diameter ÷ 2)².

Find the volume

area × gravel depth, after every measurement is converted to the same base unit.

Add overage

volume × (1 + overage ÷ 100), then round up to a practical ordering quantity.

Weight is an estimate: volume × bulk density. Moisture, stone size, and compaction change real-world density, so confirm load limits and supplier conversions before ordering.

Worked example

Gravel for a 30 × 12 ft area

For an area 30 ft long, 12 ft wide, and 4 in deep, the base volume is 120 cubic feet, or 4.44 cubic yards. Adding 10% overage gives 4.89 cubic yards, so the practical order quantity is 4.9 cubic yards.

Using the all-purpose gravel profile at 1,680 kg/m³, that order weighs approximately 6.93 US tons. The density is an estimate, so ask the supplier how they convert volume to weight for the specific product.

How to measure for gravel

  1. Outline the finished area. Measure the longest length and width for rectangles, or edge-to-edge diameter for circles.
  2. Choose the finished gravel depth. Enter only the gravel layer, not soil removal or a separate compacted base layer.
  3. Split irregular spaces. Calculate simple rectangles or circles separately, then add their order quantities.
  4. Confirm how the supplier sells. Bulk gravel may be sold by volume or weight, while small projects may use bags.

What can change the amount you need?

Uneven ground, compaction, moisture, stone grading, and delivery increments can all change the real quantity. The selected overage helps with ordinary variation, but it is not a substitute for site-specific preparation.
