Worked example

Decorative rock for a 20 × 10 ft bed

At 3 in deep, the bed needs 50 cubic feet before overage. Adding 10% gives 55 cubic feet, or 2.04 cubic yards, rounded to 2.1 cubic yards.

The volume stays the same across profiles, but estimated weight changes sharply: porous lava rock is much lighter than crushed granite or marble chips.

Decorative stone guidance

Choose depth for the actual product grading

  1. Measure visible coverage. Exclude edging, structures, and uncovered planting openings.
  2. Check stone size. Larger chips generally need a deeper layer for consistent ground cover.
  3. Select the closest profile. Crushed granite, porous lava rock, and marble chips do not share one reliable weight.
  4. Override density when possible. Supplier data is better than a generic profile for hauling decisions.
