Measurement method
Measure area first, then use one finished depth
- Break the project into simple shapes. Use length × width for rectangles and π × radius² for circles.
- Choose the finished gravel depth. This must come from the project plan; the calculator does not design the layer.
- Keep units consistent. Convert an inch or centimeter depth before multiplying it by area.
- Add separate areas at the end. This is clearer than forcing an irregular path or bed into one oversized rectangle.
Quantity formula
Convert measured coverage into order volume
base volume = surface area × finished depth
adjusted volume = base volume × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)
A 20 × 10 ft area at a selected 3 in depth contains 50 ft³, or about 1.85 yd³. With a user-selected 10% allowance, the adjusted amount is about 2.04 yd³; a supplier-facing quantity rounded upward to one decimal place is 2.1 yd³.
Volume and weight
Order by the unit the supplier actually sells
Geometry determines volume. Weight is a second estimate calculated from volume × bulk density. Grading, void space, moisture and source change bulk density, so a generic tonnage is not interchangeable with the supplier's conversion.
Do not multiply by depth in inches while area is still in square feet. Convert 3 in to 0.25 ft first, or let the calculator normalize the units.
