Pea Gravel vs Crushed Stone

Pea gravel is typically rounded and remains relatively loose, while crushed stone is manufactured with angular faces that can interlock when properly graded and compacted. The project specification—not appearance alone—should determine which material to use.

Choose by function

Start with the project requirement, not the material name

Ask whether the layer must remain decorative and loose, drain freely, provide a compacted base, support traffic, or meet a written gradation. “Pea gravel” and “crushed stone” are broad market terms; the supplier's product description and the project specification control.

No structural substitution

Do not replace a specified compactable aggregate with rounded gravel—or the reverse—based only on this comparison. Base, drainage and load-bearing suitability require the actual design and material data.

Quantity comparison

The same volume can produce different weight estimates

Both materials begin with the same geometry, but their bulk densities can differ because particle shape, grading, voids and moisture differ. Use the dedicated pea-gravel profile for a first estimate and a supplier density for haul or weight-priced orders.
