How the gravel calculation works

Find the area

Rectangle: length × width. Circle: π × (diameter ÷ 2)².

Find the volume

area × gravel depth, after every measurement is converted to the same base unit.

Add overage

volume × (1 + overage ÷ 100), then round up to a practical ordering quantity.

Weight is an estimate: volume × bulk density. Moisture, stone size, and compaction change real-world density, so confirm load limits and supplier conversions before ordering.

Pea gravel assumptions

Plan for movement and containment

Pea gravel is rounded and does not lock together like angular crushed stone. Edging, the prepared base, drainage, and intended use matter as much as quantity. The calculator uses an approximate bulk density of 1,600 kg/m³, which you can override with supplier data.
