Calculation assumptions
  • Approximate bulk density: 350 kg/m³.
  • The material is spread to a uniform finished depth.
  • Weight is an approximation; moisture and compaction can change actual weight.

Transparent math

How mulch quantity is calculated

1

Measure area

Use length × width, or π × radius² for a circular bed.

2

Apply depth

area × finished mulch depth gives base volume.

3

Add overage

Add the selected percentage and round bulk or bag quantities upward.

Measurement guidance

Measure only the area you will cover

Split irregular beds into simple rectangles and circles. Exclude large patios, structures, and other uncovered areas. Bag counts use the volume printed on the bag—not its weight.

Density varies widely

Mulch weight changes with material, particle size, and moisture. Use supplier density for delivery or vehicle-load planning.
