Calculation assumptions
  • Approximate bulk density: 1,300 kg/m³.
  • The material is spread to a uniform finished depth.
  • Weight is an approximation; moisture and compaction can change actual weight.

Transparent math

How topsoil quantity is calculated

1

Find surface area

Calculate a rectangle or circular area in normalized units.

2

Apply soil depth

area × finished topsoil depth gives the required volume.

3

Plan the purchase

Add overage and round bulk volume or bags upward.

Measurement guidance

Account for settling and uneven ground

Enter the finished soil depth across the measured area. Existing grade, low spots, settling, and compaction can increase the actual amount. Use the overage control for ordinary variation and split changing-depth areas into separate estimates.

Moisture changes weight

Topsoil density varies substantially with moisture and composition. Confirm supplier weights before arranging transport.
