Measurement method
Measure only the bed that will receive mulch
- Split the bed into rectangles and circles. Exclude patios, structures and large uncovered areas.
- Use the intended finished depth. Select it from the planting plan or suitable horticultural guidance for the site.
- Calculate volume. Multiply total area by depth after converting both to compatible units.
- Match the purchase format. Bulk orders use cubic yards or meters; bags use the volume printed on the package.
Worked example
A 20 × 10 ft bed at a selected 3 in depth
The bed area is 200 ft². A 3 in depth is 0.25 ft, so the base volume is 50 ft³ or about 1.85 yd³. A user-selected 10% allowance gives about 2.04 yd³, which rounds upward to 2.1 yd³ for a one-decimal bulk order.
If buying bags, divide the adjusted cubic-foot volume by the exact volume printed on one bag and round upward to a whole bag.
Material caveat
Bag volume and bulk weight answer different questions
Use package volume—not bag weight—to calculate coverage. Wood species, particle size, moisture and compost content can change bulk weight substantially without changing the geometric bed volume.
Uneven beds, existing mulch and settlement affect real use. Measure several points and treat overage as an explicit project assumption rather than a universal percentage.
