Calculation assumptions
  • Each sod piece covers 10 sq ft (0.93 m²).
  • A full pallet is assumed to contain 50 pieces; supplier pallet sizes vary.
  • Pieces and full pallets always round upward so the adjusted lawn area is covered.
  • Calculate irregular or separated lawn sections individually and add their adjusted areas.

Transparent math

How sod quantity is calculated

1

Measure lawn area

length × width gives the rectangular lawn area.

2

Add cutting waste

area × (1 + waste ÷ 100) gives adjusted coverage.

3

Round purchase units up

Divide by editable piece coverage, then round pieces and full pallets upward.

Worked example

Sod for a 30 × 20 ft lawn

The measured lawn is 600 square feet. With 10% waste, the adjusted area is 660 square feet. Using editable 2 × 5 ft rolls, the order is 66 rolls, or two full pallets when the supplier packs 50 rolls per pallet.

Measurement guidance

Confirm the supplier's actual sod format

  1. Divide the lawn into rectangles. Calculate separated areas individually and add their adjusted coverage.
  2. Exclude beds and hardscape. Subtract areas that will not receive sod before ordering.
  3. Enter real piece dimensions. Rolls and slabs vary by grass type, farm, and region.
  4. Confirm pallet count. Supplier pallets commonly vary, so the default must not be treated as universal.
Editable planning profile

The starting 2 × 5 ft roll and 50-roll pallet reflect one documented supplier format. Replace both values with the product you will purchase.
