How the sand calculation works

Find the area

Use length × width, or π × radius² for a circle.

Apply finished depth

area × sand depth gives the uncompacted geometric volume.

Plan the order

Add overage, then round bulk volume or whole bags upward.

Approximate weight equals order volume × selected bulk density. Density changes weight—not the geometric volume.

Worked example

Sand for a 20 × 10 ft area

A 20 × 10 ft area at 2 in deep contains 33.33 cubic feet, or 1.23 cubic yards. With 10% overage, the order volume is 1.36 cubic yards, rounded up to 1.4 cubic yards.

Measurement guidance

Choose the sand and depth your project specifies

  1. Measure the finished coverage area. Split irregular spaces into rectangles or circles and calculate them separately.
  2. Enter the sand layer only. Do not include aggregate base, excavation, or other materials in the depth.
  3. Match the material profile. Masonry, concrete, fill, and play sand have different grading and uses.
  4. Confirm supplier density and delivery increments. Moisture and compaction can materially change actual weight.
