Calculation assumptions
  • The project is one rectangle with a regular straight rectangular-tile layout.
  • Tile dimensions are actual face dimensions; the entered joint is added in both directions.
  • Box count uses the face area of the waste-adjusted tile count and the exact product's entered box coverage.
  • Borders, diagonal or offset layouts, mosaics, pattern repeats, trim, substrate, movement joints, grout, mortar, and installation suitability are excluded.

Tile-module math

How tile pieces and boxes are calculated

1

Surface area

project length × project width.

2

Installed module

(actual tile length + joint) × (actual tile width + joint).

3

Purchase units

Round the base pieces up, add waste, round again, then use entered box coverage when supplied.

Worked example

A 10 × 8 ft surface with 12 in tile

With an ⅛ in joint, each installed module is slightly larger than one square foot. The 80-square-foot surface needs 79 whole tiles before waste and 87 tiles after 10% overage and whole-piece rounding.

Measurement guidance

Use actual tile size and the product's box data

  1. Measure one rectangular field. Calculate separated or irregular fields individually.
  2. Do not rely on nominal size. Manufacturer actual dimensions can differ from the product name.
  3. Confirm the joint. Use the manufacturer's recommendation and project layout.
  4. Copy box coverage. Pieces and square footage per carton vary by product.
Straight rectangular layout only

No diagonal, offset, mosaic, multi-size, border, trim, or pattern-repeat optimization is claimed. The result does not determine substrate, movement joints, mortar, grout, wet-area suitability, slip performance, or code compliance.
