Calculation assumptions
  • Every counted area is the same rectangle; calculate different room sizes separately and add their orders.
  • The excluded area is one combined total for fixed areas that will not receive flooring.
  • Package coverage is optional and must be copied from the exact selected product.
  • This general calculator does not model tile joints, carpet roll layout, plank staggering, pattern matching, transitions, or installation suitability.

General coverage math

How flooring coverage is calculated

1

Raw area

(length × width × equal areas) − exclusions.

2

Waste-adjusted area

raw area × (1 + waste ÷ 100).

3

Optional cartons

Divide adjusted area by product coverage and round up.

Worked example

A 12 × 10 ft room with 10% waste

The raw area is 120 square feet and the adjusted order area is 132 square feet. If the selected carton covers 20 square feet, the purchase estimate is seven whole cartons.

Measurement guidance

Use this for broad area planning

  1. Split unlike rooms. The count repeats one rectangular size; calculate different dimensions separately.
  2. Subtract only true exclusions. Include closets or alcoves that will receive flooring.
  3. Copy carton coverage. Coverage is product-specific and may differ even within one brand.
  4. Choose the matching price unit. Area pricing uses the displayed sq ft or m²; package pricing uses whole cartons.
General-purpose boundary

This page does not model tile joints, carpet rolls, plank staggering, pattern repeats, transitions, substrate preparation, or installation suitability. Use the Tile or Carpet calculator when those purchasing constraints matter.
