How Much Tile Waste Should I Add?

Tile waste is project-specific. Straight open layouts usually need less extra material than diagonal patterns, many edges, niches or fragile products. Use the installer or manufacturer allowance when one is specified; otherwise document the percentage you choose.

Choose waste from the layout, not a universal rule

A single percentage cannot describe every tile installation. Consider the actual tile size, room geometry, edge cuts, diagonal or patterned layout, niches, penetrations, breakage risk, shade/lot continuity and whether matching replacement tile should remain after the project.

  • Lower cut complexity: an open rectangular field with a simple straight layout.
  • Higher cut complexity: diagonals, offsets, small rooms, many corners, borders or repeated penetrations.
  • Product-specific factors: fragile pieces, intentional shade blending, pattern repeats, calibrated sizing and carton quantities.

Apply the chosen allowance before whole-box rounding

adjusted tile area = measured tile area × (1 + waste ÷ 100)

Worked example—not a recommendation

An 80 ft² surface with a deliberately selected 10% allowance requires 88 ft² of coverage. If the exact product carton covers 12 ft², divide 88 by 12 and round upward: 8 cartons, providing 96 ft².

The tile calculator also estimates pieces from actual tile dimensions and the entered joint. A box calculation should use the manufacturer's square-foot coverage, not a guessed pieces-per-box value.

Before ordering

Verify actual size, joint and carton data

Nominal size can differ from actual size. Product literature may also specify a recommended joint, pieces per carton and square feet per carton. Those values affect the count and should replace generic assumptions.

Installation boundary

Waste quantity does not approve the substrate, movement joints, mortar, grout, waterproofing, slip resistance or wet-area system.
