Carpet calculator

Estimate broadloom carpet from one rectangular room, the selected roll width, a fixed strip direction, waste, and optional area price.

Broadloom strip estimate

Calculate carpet from roll width

Measurement system
Each full-width strip runs in this direction.
Confirm the selected product; 12 ft is common but not universal.
Layout boundary

This model runs strips along the entered room length. It does not rotate or optimize seams and does not add pattern-repeat matching. Swap length and width to compare the other direction, then confirm with the installer.

Overage

Covers spillage, uneven depth, settling, and minor measurement differences.

Shopping list

  • Broadloom carpet1 full-width strip; 13.20 linear ft total roll length.17.6 sq yd
Calculation assumptions
  • Full-width strips run in the entered room-length direction and span the entered room width.
  • The estimate does not rotate the layout or optimize seams; swap length and width to compare the other direction.
  • Waste is added after roll-width strip layout and may not cover pattern-repeat matching.
  • Closets, doorways, irregular shapes, seam placement, pile direction, pattern matching, cushion, transitions, and installation suitability require a product-specific layout.

Roll-width math

How carpet material is calculated

1

Full-width strips

ceil(room width ÷ roll width).

2

Roll material

strips × room length × roll width includes strip-layout offcut.

3

Order area

Add waste and round upward to 0.1 sq yd or 0.1 m².

Worked example

A 12 × 10 ft room from a 12 ft roll

One full-width strip runs 12 feet, so the base roll material is 144 square feet, or 16 square yards. With 10% overage, the estimate is 17.6 square yards and zero internal seams.

Layout guidance

A transparent strip estimate, not seam optimization

  1. Enter the strip direction as room length. Every strip runs that way.
  2. Confirm roll width. Twelve-foot broadloom is common, but 15-foot and other formats exist.
  3. Compare orientation. Swap room length and width to see the other simple direction.
  4. Ask for a seam plan. Openings, closets, pile direction, visibility, and installation constraints affect placement.
Prominent limitation

The calculator does not optimize roll layout or pattern matching. Pattern repeats can require more material, and a qualified estimator should finalize seams, direction, cushion, transitions, and installation.
