Calculation assumptions
  • Every counted wall uses the same entered length and height; calculate unlike sections separately.
  • The ceiling and all door/window openings are entered as total areas.
  • One drywall layer is estimated; sheet orientation, seams, offcut reuse, specialty panels, screws, tape, and compound are not inferred.
  • This quantity estimate does not determine fire rating, moisture suitability, structure, or code compliance.

Transparent sheet math

How drywall sheets are calculated

1

Net surface area

(wall length × height × count) + ceiling − openings.

2

Base sheet count

Divide net area by the entered sheet area and round up to a whole sheet.

3

Order quantity

Add the selected overage to the whole base count, then round up again.

Worked example

One 12 × 8 ft wall with 4 × 8 ft sheets

The wall has 96 square feet of net area. Three 32-square-foot sheets cover it before cuts. With 10% overage applied to the whole base count, the purchase estimate rounds up to 4 sheets.

Measurement guidance

Measure coverage, then confirm the board specification

  1. Group equal walls. Use the count only for walls with the same entered dimensions.
  2. Combine openings. Add door and window areas and enter the total once.
  3. Add ceilings deliberately. Enter zero when the ceiling is outside the project.
  4. Use the real sheet size. Products are available in multiple lengths and widths.
Quantity only

No fire rating, moisture suitability, layer count, fastener schedule, structure, or code compliance is implied. Sheet orientation, seams, offcut reuse, tape, screws, and compound need a project-specific layout.
