How drywall sheets are calculated

Net surface area

(wall length × height × count) + ceiling − openings.

Waste-adjusted coverage

Apply the selected overage to the net surface area.

Order quantity

Divide adjusted coverage by entered sheet area and round up once to whole sheets.

Worked example

One 12 × 8 ft wall with 4 × 8 ft sheets

The wall has 96 square feet of net area. A 10% allowance raises the planned coverage to 105.6 square feet. Dividing by 32 square feet per sheet and rounding upward produces 4 sheets.

Measurement guidance

Measure coverage, then confirm the board specification

  1. Group equal walls. Use the count only for walls with the same entered dimensions.
  2. Combine openings. Add door and window areas and enter the total once.
  3. Add ceilings deliberately. Enter zero when the ceiling is outside the project.
  4. Use the real sheet size. Products are available in multiple lengths and widths.
