Depth depends on the complete driveway section
A depth copied from another project can be wrong for the local subgrade, drainage, freeze conditions, slope, traffic or aggregate. Confirm the compacted section with the applicable project design, local guidance or an experienced local supplier before calculating material.
- Subgrade: weak or wet soil changes preparation and support needs.
- Drainage: water management and cross-slope affect long-term performance.
- Traffic: passenger cars and repeated heavy vehicles are different design cases.
- Materials: base aggregate and surface gravel can have different grading and compaction behavior.
Layer quantities
Calculate the base and surface separately
For each layer, multiply driveway area by its specified compacted depth. If the supplier or project provides an expected volume-loss factor, convert compacted volume to loose order volume before adding overage:
loose volume = compacted volume ÷ (1 − compaction loss)
For a 40 × 12 ft driveway, an assumed 4 in base and 2 in surface, 15% volume loss and 5% overage produce about 7.4 yd³ of base and 3.7 yd³ of surface material. Replace every assumption with the confirmed project section and supplier data.
Avoid ordering errors
Finished depth and delivered depth are not the same promise
A compacted finished layer is the design outcome. Delivered loose material may occupy more volume before placement, and real yield depends on grading, moisture, equipment and field conditions. Keep the layers separate on the shopping list and confirm whether the supplier sells by volume or weight.
