Calculation assumptions
  • The fence is one continuous straight run; each gate adds one post beyond the continuous run count.
  • Post spacing is treated as a maximum, so every partial bay creates a full additional bay.
  • Pickets cover only total fence length minus entered gate width.
  • Concrete bags are a user-entered planning multiplier; calculate hole volume and use the selected product's stated yield for a project-specific bag count.
  • Post depth, footing volume, bracing, wind load, terrain changes, corners, and gate hardware require project-specific verification.

Subtract combined gate width from total fence length.

Divide by maximum post spacing and add gate post boundaries.

Apply rails per bay, picket face width and gap, then add waste.

Measurement guidance

Corners, slopes, and loads need a layout

Measure the fence centerline and record the combined clear width of all gates separately. Calculate distinct straight runs separately when corners, slopes, or spacing rules change.
