Calculation assumptions
  • Stud spacing uses the same transparent interval method as the Stud Calculator; separate sections each receive their own end-member assumption.
  • Opening additions are exactly opening count × user-entered additional studs; RightQty does not choose king, jack, cripple, or header requirements.
  • Top and bottom plates are separately rounded to whole entered stock lengths, so offcuts are not shared between those groups.
  • Headers, beams, loads, member sizes, blocking, connections, fire stops, fastening schedules, and code compliance are not designed or approved.

Stud members

Count spacing positions, replace boundary positions with entered end studs, then add openings × additional studs.

wall length × sections × entered plate runs for top and bottom groups.

Whole stock pieces

Apply waste, divide plate groups by entered stock length, and round each group upward.

Worked example

A 16 ft wall with one explicitly modeled opening

At 16 in spacing with two end studs and four user-specified opening studs, the base is 17 studs and the 10% order is 19. Two top runs and one bottom run using 8 ft stock require five top boards and three bottom boards, for 27 framing pieces.

RightQty follows the design you enter

  1. Confirm spacing and ends. They come from the project design.
  2. Enter opening additions explicitly. The calculator does not decide the king, jack, or cripple arrangement.
  3. State plate runs. Top and bottom quantities remain separate.
  4. Use stocked lengths. Each plate group rounds independently without assumed offcut reuse.
No structural design

RightQty does not size headers, beams, studs, plates, connections, or fasteners and does not determine loads, bracing, fire blocking, required spacing, or code compliance. A qualified professional and local requirements control the design.
